Reading for Monday has been uploaded

Dear Students,

I've just uploaded the reading for Monday. It is the first two chapters of the book In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio, by Philippe Bourgois, about 55 pages. It may sound like a lot of reading , but I believe you'll find this text very engrossing. It is the story of a Harvard-educated anthropologist who spent five years during the 1980s--some of the worst years for crime in New York City--living with his family next door to a crackhouse in Spanish Harlem. He was able to befriend addicts and dealers in order to learn what were the underlying political and economic reasons for the devastation wrought by drugs in that neighborhood.

Later today I will post some specific guidelines for your reading response (due Sunday by 8pm). I will give you some questions to help guide your writing.

Have a great day,
Miriam
